Client

Our client is private equity owned. The company develops and manufactures heavy automotive related equipment for e.g. mining, construction and transport industries. It has some 3.500 employees, a turnover of appr. € 800 million and production facilities in China, India, Brazil, Italy and Germany. In the Netherlands only outsourced production takes place. The organization has 6 business lines, manufacturing container handling equipment, lifting and loading equipment, etc.

The head office houses appr. 170 employees of 27 different nationalities and is located in the Leiden region.

 

Procurement

The department is headed by the CPO, who works for the company since December 2017 and is still quite busy building his team. He has 2 types of roles reporting into him:

  • Global category management, predominantly based in the Leiden region with 5 positions at present. This role started some 1,5 year ago and is evolving further
  • Regional tactical procurement. E.g. for the European sites there is a team in NL of 3,5 FTE. In total globally some 25 persons.

Total spend  is appr. € 500 mio., of which appr. € 65 mio. in steel tubes, flat steel appr. € 25 mio., mechanical appr. € 80 mio. and hydraulics & pneumatics appr. € 70 mio.

The level of professionalism in the procurement function is increasing but is partly dictated by the progress in that respect made at the manufacturing sites.

Operational procurement is positioned within the (separate) Supply Chain organization.

 

The position

The company’s business is destined to shift gradually from providing  equipment for trucks into also handling and selling data. This job must help make that transition possible.

You will come to globally procure sensors, controllers, screens, gateways, etc. In total a spend of appr. € 15 mio. but scheduled to grow rapidly.  These electronic products will provide solutions for data extraction, such as active weighing.

You need to be involved in the NPD/innovation process at the earliest possible stages, bring the technology roadmap of the world wide market for electronic equipment into the R&D/innovation process and make sure that R&D connects with what happens outside the company.  So as to create the supply base that enable it to grow this new business.

 

Beside your Electronics role, you will also come to manage the relation with OEM’s who supply end products that can be sold under the company’s own label, such as socalled hookloaders. In total this concerns a spend of appr. € 25 mio.

 

Your stakeholders are primarily R&D, manufacturing, supply chain and finance, at all levels. You feel comfortable communicating with top management as well as operators.

 

It is a hands-on role, where one needs to earn trust by tackling operational issues and getting results as of the very start. The first months will be needed to get to know the organization, the stakeholders and supply base and to create your network within the organization. Only when that is all in place the time will come to draft subcategory plans based on sound data analyses, in depth supply market knowledge and strong involvement of stakeholders, many of whom already work for the company a long time.

Once you are familiar with your new job, it is expected that you develop your suppliers, seeking new business with them, bringing innovation into the company, constantly thinking about the make/buy balance. An example is a supplier that builds a factory close to the company’s Indian manufacturing site, solely for the purpose of serving that site’s needs. You are always searching for new suppliers, in close cooperation with your stakeholders of course.

Examples of projects that are presently running are 1. a Cost Engineering Program (CEP) based on QLTCS; 2. Standardization of the use of Infor LN at all sites and 3. Dealing with the many challenges the supply chain offers nowadays.

Within procurement a dashboard is in place based on NPD, QLTCS, supplier management.

Your targets are cost savings, your subcategory plans and the overall performance of the procurement department (team effort).

Appr. 20% travel is expected in the role. You can work max. 2 days/week from home.

Your home office can be the head office near Leiden, or the manufacturing site in Italy (Poviglio, RE) .

 

Your profile

  • Academic working level
  • Analytical and strategic yet hands-on as well
  • Sound international procurement management- or sales experience
  • Good market and product knowledge of electronics
  • Experience working within the manufacturing industry
  • Strong communicator, likeable person
  • Excellent command of English, Dutch is NOT required.

 

Offer

Your gross salary is up to € 110.000/yr, depending on experience and knowledge. A bonus scheme applies that  may run up to 20% depending on company’s results, procurement’s performance and your results and appraisal. Furthermore you will get 29 vacation days, a company car and a pension scheme.
