Our client is a private equity owned. The company develops and manufactures heavy automotive related equipment for e.g. mining, construction and transport industries. It has some 3.500 employees, a turnover of appr. € 700 million and production facilities in China, India, Brazil, Italy, Poland and Germany. In the Netherlands only outsourced production takes place. The organization has 6 business lines.
The head office houses appr. 170 employees of 27 different nationalities and is located in the Leiden region.
The department is headed by the CPO. Who started at he company in December 2017 and is still quite busy building his teams. He has 3 types of roles reporting into him:
- Local tactical procurement, based at the production sites, totalling some 25 persons
- Global category management, predominantly based in the Leiden region with 5 positions at present. This role started some 1,5 year ago and is evolving further
- Procurement account managers. At present Global category managers also act as Procurement account managers.
Total spend is appr. € 450 mio., of which appr. € 55 mio. in steel tubes, flat steel appr. € 20 mio., mechanical more than € 100 mio. and hydraulics & pneumatics appr. € 60 mio.
The level of professionalism in the procurement function is increasing but is to a degree dictated by the progress in that respect made at the manufacturing sites.
Operational procurement is positioned within the (separate) Supply Chain organization.
You are quite familiar dealing with engineering, reading technical drawings and being involved in NPD programs. It is a hands-on role, where one needs to earn trust by tackling operational issues and getting results as of the very start. The first months will be needed to get to know the organization, the stakeholders and supply base and to create your network within the organization. Only when that is all in place the time will have come to draft subcategory plans based on sound data analysis, in depth supply market knowledge and strong involvement of stakeholders, many of whom already work for the company a long time.
You will procure mechanical and outsouced products, based on your company’s IP, such as the outsourcing of- or end products based on machining, casting, forging, metal works, welded structures. A truly global spend of more than € 100 mio. in total.
Major stakeholders are Group management, R&D/engineering, local procurement, your CPO and Business Line management.
You may also become responsible for the Procurement account management for one Business line.
Once you are familiar with your new job, it is expected that you develop your suppliers, seeking new business with them, bringing innovation into the company, constantly thinking about the make/buy balance. An example is that at present a supplier is building a factory close to the company’s Indian manufacturing site, solely for the purpose of serving that site’s needs. You are always searching for new suppliers, in close cooperation with your stakeholders of course. Together with engineering you work on NPD programs.
Projects that are presently running are 1. a Cost Engineering Program (CEP) based on the QLTCS principles and 2. standardization of the use of Infor LN at all sites. Within procurement a dashboard is in place based on QLTCS and supplier management.
Your targets are cost savings, your subcategory plans and the overall performance of the procurement department (team effort).
Appr. 20% travel is expected in the role. You can work 2 – 3 days/week from home.
Your home office can be the head office near Leiden, or at one of the manufacturing sites.
- Academic working level
- Analytical and strategic yet hands-on as well
- Sound international procurement category management experience
- Able to read technical drawings, sound experience with the mechanical category, e.g. good knowledge of the cost components of outsourcing of mechanical spend
- Experience working within the manufacturing industry
- Strong communicator, likeable person
- Excellent command of English, Dutch is NOT required.
Your gross salary is up to € 110.000/yr, depending on experience and knowledge. A bonus scheme applies that may run up to 20% depending on company’s results, procurement’s performance and your results and appraisal. Furthermore you will get 25+6 vacation days, a company car and a pension scheme.
