Purchaser Ocean Transport

Our principal is one of the world’s leading third party logistics providers, specialising in freightforwarding and related supply chain solutions. The company has about 11,000 employees working in more than 300 offices around the world and a global presence in about 100 countries. It’s net turnover is USD 3.2 billion and manages 2.8 million TEU of ocean freight and air freighted more than 225.000 tonnes.

The position

Within the purchasing department for the region Benelux and Switzerland, you will be part of a team of 6 purchasers, located in Rotterdam, Schiphol and Ekeren (B). This team arranges the transport for appr. 80.000 TEU, totaling some € 160 mio. spend. Your location will be Rotterdam (or Ekeren if you are Belgian).

Your focus will be on the procurement of ocean transport (containers). 80% of the business is covered by frame contracts, 20% will need to be procured on the spot market. Your activities on the spot market (for customer specific requests: destinations, volumes, timing) nevertheless comprise appr. 80% of your workload.

Your key responsibilities are:

• Work with ocean carriers and ocean team colleagues to reduce costs by effective procurement, cargo mixing and prioritizing sales requests
• Devise tariffs for transactional business
• Develop Procurement initiatives and adherence to KPI’s to achieve operational excellence.

Your profile

It is expected that you have a broad network and background in the market for ocean transport and are familiar with terms like EMS, AMS, Solas, VGM.

• A broad network within the market of ocean shipping companies
• A solid background in procurement of ocean shipping
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
• Strong knowledge of MS Excel (ability to work with pivot tables, formulas, etc.)
• Thoroughly familiar with terms such as EMS, AMS, SOLAS, VGM
• Strong soft skills and above all a strong negotiator
• Belgian candidates are preferred.
