Principal
A globally operating family business in the maritime sector with around 10 ships in possession and approximately 2,500 employees.
Procurement
The team consists of the Procurement Manager, three Team Leads, five Tactical Buyers, 9 contract engineers and twelve Operational Buyers. The teams are primarily responsible for the procurement to maintain the fleet’s operational readiness, the offshore projects as well as for NPR procurement.
Over the past three years, Procurement has made significant progress within the organization. The largest MRO commodities have been contracted, significantly reducing the number of suppliers. The rest of the organization now recognizes the added value of procurement and is working well with the improvements. Significant gains can still be made, as 25% of the €80 million in consumables still goes through existing contracts (the remainder is ordered from uncontracted parties). In other words, there is ample room for improvement.
Responsibilities
The role involves sourcing, selecting, and contracting suppliers, and has a serious impact on the organization. When you start, you will receive several (sub)categories, such as spare parts and/or consumables. You will then analyze these categories and identify areas for improvement. You will work closely with the Technical Department, your eyes and ears on the shop floor, who fully understand the benefits of good procurement.
After contracting the supplier, you will also be responsible for contract management, supplier development, vendor management, etc. In a way, you will be the account manager of the supplier. You may analyze categories that will lead to significant process changes. For example, a recent large-scale analysis was conducted on the global procurement of medicines for the ship’s crew, taking into account local availability, regulations, etc. This ultimately led to the contracting of one party that handles this globally, resulting in significant improvements in terms of timely availability and costs.
