How secondment works

The same buyer, a different contract.

With secondment, a procurement professional works in your organisation while we take care of the payroll. In terms of content you notice no difference: the same experience and commitment as with a freelance interim buyer. The difference lies in the contract and in who carries the risk.

Now that enforcement on false self-employment has been tightened, clients look at this more closely. With secondment that is not an issue: the buyer works as an employee, not as a freelancer. If the buyer drops out, replacement is our problem.

xentys seconds buyers to technical and project-driven organisations: industry and machine building, construction and infrastructure, offshore and energy, high tech, shipbuilding, manufacturing and logistics.

When is procurement secondment the logical choice?

The assignment lasts longer than a few months

The longer someone is part of the team, the more the role resembles a permanent position. Working as an employee prevents that debate.

An operational or tactical role

Not a defined project, but work that comes back every week.

No debate about the contract type

The buyer works as an employee, not as a freelancer.

Certainty about replacement

In case of illness, leave or departure, we arrange a replacement.

A permanent vacancy is still open

The procurement department keeps running while recruitment is under way.

Hiring the buyer yourself later

You see someone perform first, before you offer a permanent contract.

Roles we second

Which procurement roles do we second?

Secondment works best for roles that recur structurally in your procurement process.

Operational buyer

Orders, order confirmations, monitoring lead times and day-to-day contact with suppliers.

Procurement assistant

Supporting the procurement team, administration, data and monitoring agreements.

Tactical buyer

Quotation processes, supplier agreements and contract management within existing categories.

Purchasing technical components, systems and engineered items in production environments.

Project buyer

Project procurement from kick-off to delivery, in machine building, construction and offshore.

Procurement adviser

Advice on procurement policy, processes and professionalising the procurement function.

Our process

From assignment to seconded buyer.

Our consultants come from the procurement profession. They assess candidates on substance, not on keywords from the job description.

Intake

We map out the assignment, the context, the profile, the start date and the duration.

X-ray interviews

We test candidates on real situations from your organisation. Within three working days you receive a proposal.

Contract and payroll

When there is a match, we take care of the contract, the payroll, the payroll taxes and the insurance. You pay one rate.

Aftercare

We stay in touch with you and the buyer, and arrange a replacement if needed.

Fully handled

What secondment takes off your hands.

We handle the contract, the payments, absence and replacement. You manage the content of the work.

Contract

We take care of the contract and all employer obligations, so you don’t have to.

Payroll tax and contributions

Paid correctly; we take care of that.

Illness and absence

We take care of continued pay and support, not you.

Replacement

In case of long-term absence or departure, we arrange a successor.

One point of contact

One contact person at xentys for the entire assignment.

You pay one hourly rate that covers salary, employer costs, insurance and support, with no separate costs for recruitment, contracts or replacement. In a twenty-minute intake we give you a concrete range.

Interim, secondment or permanent

Which route fits your question?

Someone needs to get started in your procurement team. Which route fits depends on the duration, the type of role and whether you want to employ the buyer yourself. Not sure? Then we discuss it in the intake.

AkzoNobel

“We asked xentys to find a senior buyer for our chemical plant. They delivered candidates with the right profile, professionally and quickly. The interim professional we chose performed his role so well that we soon decided to appoint him as interim procurement manager. He has now been working for us for almost 2 years.”

Frequently asked questions

With procurement secondment, a procurement professional works at your location while the secondment agency takes care of the payroll. You will also come across the same service as seconded buyer, buyer secondment or procurement staffing. The difference with a freelance interim professional lies in the contract type, not in the work.
The work is the same. With secondment the buyer works as an employee and we take care of the payroll; with interim it is usually a freelancer with their own business. The difference lies in the contract type, the liability and who arranges replacement if the buyer drops out.
Not with secondment. The buyer works as an employee, not as a freelancer, and we take care of the payroll. We are NEN-4400-1 certified and listed in the SNA register.
Usually within a few working days after the intake, depending on the profile and availability. Scarce profiles can take longer, and we tell you that up front, not halfway through.
The rate depends on the level of the role, the sector, the duration of the assignment and the number of hours per week. There are no separate costs for recruitment, contract handling or replacement. In a twenty-minute intake we give you a concrete range, so you know where you stand before we propose candidates.
Then that is our problem, not yours. We take care of illness and absence. If the absence lasts longer, we arrange a replacement.
Yes. Many clients deliberately use secondment as a way to get to know each other. We agree the terms for a takeover in advance.

We align the duration and notice period with the assignment and record them in the assignment agreement.

Most secondment agencies cover a broad range: engineering, finance, IT and procurement on the side. We only do procurement, purchasing and supply chain, and you can tell from the conversations we have with candidates.
