Sourcing manager

Owner of the group is a private equity (PE) party. The group consists of 3 divisions, ‘Transportation’, ‘Industrial’ and ‘Brake & Friction’, has a total of about 3,500 employees and offices in 29 countries. Our client is the director procurement of the Transportation division, whose head office is located in Hengelo area, with production sites in NL, Turkey, France, India, China, US, Brazil, China and Mexico. Transportation has about 670 employees and a turnover of $220m. The Transportation division has three brands engaged in the development and production of hydraulic systems for tilting truck cabins, mechanical systems for securing truck cabins, electromechanical engine components and mechanics for manipulating convertible roofs. Customers of this division include Scania, Volvo, DAF. Engineering of the systems to be produced takes place based on customer requirements followed by “mass production”. The hydraulics are produced in-house, further components are assembled into the end-product.

Within the group, Procurement is led by the CPO, who has been in office since October and is full of plans. The CPO was given the goal by the (active) PE to focus on value creation (reduction of material costs and inventory levels). From customers, there is great pressure to reduce their purchase price.

Reporting to the CPO are the 3 Procurement directors of the 3 divisions, a Director of category management and a Director of indirect procurement.

The Procurement director ‘Transportation’ (in office since March 2023) is responsible with his team for direct procurement on behalf of all manufacturing plants of the Transportation division, a total spend of approx. € 120 million. His team consists of:

  • 4 Supplier Quality engineers
  • Sr. buyer at the site in France
  • Sr. buyer at the India office
  • Sourcing manager in the US with 2 employees
  • Sourcing manager in Turkey with 2 employees
  • At the branch in Hengelo area the ‘sourcing manager’ (this vacancy) leads
    • Strategic buyer
    • Tactical buyer
    • 2 NPD (new product development) buyers.
    • 2 Assistant buyers
    • He also provides functional leadership to procurement teams in Brazil, China and Mexico.

Operational purchasing is the responsibility of the Operations department. Oracle is used as the ERP system.

The challenge throughout the procurement organization is to greatly enhance the visibility and role of procurement in the organization. Also with management. To this end, e.g., support to Engineering and Sales will have to improve greatly. The procurement team needs vision and focus.

The ‘Transportation’ headquarters near Hengelo consists of a Centre of Competence and a production site, in total some 330 employees. The local branch has as MT the managers finance, procurement, HR, operations, QA and logistics. Sales and Product line management (incl. engineering and PMO) report to the central organisation. You are responsible for a spend of approx. €60 million. This includes the purchase of machined parts, cast parts, injection moulding, aluminum, mechatronics, etc. The procurement director shares his vision on the required improvements with you and gives you a lot of freedom. Within the procurement organisation, there certainly is support for improvement and change. A discussion is currently underway to give your function a broader focus within the division (i.e. more international), but this has not yet fully crystallised. Your focus is on motivating and strengthening your team and improving the role of procurement in the organisation, e.g. by

  • communicating within the MT of the plant what the role of purchasing can be and how you want to achieve it
  • strengthening the ties with Sales and Product line management, especially in NPD projects
  • Reduce costs, e.g. by putting more focus on manufacturability and cost engineering
  • by contributing your market knowledge
  • improving working capital (reducing inventories plus better payment terms).

For several important suppliers, the plant near Hengelo is not able to create sufficient buying power (leverage). For this reason, you will look for opportunities to create synergy with the other factories, working together with a.o. Global category management. Concrete ideas in this respect are increased sourcing in China (LCC) and renegotiating contracts with existing suppliers. Switching suppliers is not easy, as this requires approval from the automotive customer.

To spread your vision you make an action plan for 2024 with concrete targets and a schedule. You report on the basis of this plan and make adjustments where necessary.

You also do part of strategic purchasing for the plant. In short, “leading by example”.

You will spend up to 20% of your time traveling internationally.

Your profile

  • Broad experience with direct purchasing in a manufacturing environment at tactical and strategic level
  • (Purchasing) management experience and a vision on purchasing in a manufacturing environment
  • ‘Continuous improvement’ is part of your DNA
  • Project management experience
  • Strong communicator
  • Command of NL is not necessary
  • Good command of English

  • Salary up to approx. €90K gross/year based on full-time commitment. Depending on knowledge and experience
  • Bonus max. 8%, mainly depending on company performance and to a lesser extent on your own performance
  • 25 + 13 vacation days
  • Pension based on CAO metal and engineering at PME
  • Hybrid working (2 days from home)
